Helping Your Pup Bond with your Newborn

Bonding between your 2 babies are so precious! Here are 4 tips from @conniechacha, transformation coach & mom of @kale_and_mochi, who became a hooman mom after having her single-pup-child for 13 years. Mochi was an only child for 13 years before we had her little brother in 2020. When we first brought him home, Mochi was immediately interested in this new person and wanted to jump into his bassinet right away to meet him. Of course, we didn’t let her in there with the new baby, but we did allow her to sniff around the outside as an informal introduction. There was some getting used to on everyone’s part!

Helping Your Pup Bond with your Newborn: Here are my top tips to help with pup-baby bonding: 1. Sniff Sniff: Let your pupper sniff out the new baby. If they’re not interested in meeting the baby yet, it’s okay too! Allow them the space to be curious & having a treat nearby never hurts. 2. Stick to Routine: Dogs are creatures of habit and love their routine & bonding time with you. Even though it’s hard to function with a newborn baby around, make sure the whole family goes on that daily pack walk. It’ll help create a bond & get everyone some much needed fresh air.

Helping Your Pup Bond with your Newborn: 3. Play Together: Allow your pupper and baby to play during tummy time. Baby toys & dog toys are very similar so it’s natural for them to want to play together. This will teach baby how to play gentle & your pup will have fun! You can always wash/sanitize the toys after. 4. Treats Save the Day: If all else fails, once your baby starts throwing things around (won’t be long), have them throw some treats to your pup! Win win for every pupper!

Helping Your Pup Bond with your Newborn: You know your dog’s personality best and can incorporate some of these tips when you’re supporting their bonding time. It’s always best practice for an adult to be present at all times. A pet should never be left alone with a baby no matter how gentle/good natured they are. And most importantly, enjoy the journey of Motherhood! XOXO, Connie, Mochi & Ash
